I love oil & gas - it makes my Porsche go fast!

Who doesn’t love oil & gas? Right!? Petrochemicals are amazing, and I just tanked up my Porsche Macan GTS and I’m going to rip up highway 1 along the Pacific Ocean, passing every Prius I see with reckless abandon and loud popping downshifts. It’s going to rock. It’s insane that I can do this and “only” pay $70 to tank up my car, while I’m learning that there will be over $5 billion in clean up costs for gas wells that are “orphaned” by the industry in California alone.

One of the dirty little secrets of the business is that the required bond to frack or drill for oil is about $5k, but it can cost millions to cap and seal up a project when it’s done. When the oil runs dry, these holding companies and shell businesses just close up and split, forfeiting the $5k and leaving it to taxpayers (you and me) to clean up.
