About the Project
Clean Oceans International addresses the global issue of plastic pollution with a next-level machine that converts ocean plastic into fuel.
This portable plastic-to-fuel system uses clean electrical power to generate gasoline, diesel and other petroleum products from plastic waste. This approach can be used locally or scaled up into profitable liquid fuel generation. This turns plastic scrap into a valuable resource, which—in turn—will result in collection that keeps harmful plastics off beaches and out of the water.
Today, Clean Oceans International is cleaning up beaches and conducting research with universities to prove that this profit model can transform the plastic pollution landscape on a global scale.
Social & Environmental Impacts
Plastic pollution has a major impact on the ocean, resulting in animal entanglement and toxins in the human and marine life food systems.
This comes at a time when the marine environment is already weakened by the impacts of climate change and overfishing. The ocean is also one of the world's most important carbon sinks, so we need to do everything possible to keep it healthy.
Transforming plastics into useable fuels keeps oil and gas—and their associated greenhouse gas emissions—in the ground. If implemented on the small scale, plastic-to-fuel conversion can reduce localized plastic pollution and eliminate the emissions associated with transportation and processing to centers for recycling. Clean Oceans International knows that this is important for costal communities, marine ecosystems and our collective future on this planet.
